Checking Out the Penobscot River Trails

Have you checked out the Penobscot River Trails up in Grindstone yet? With 16 miles of gravel trails along the East Branch of the Penobscot River, it's a great place for summer adventures.

Located just over an hour north of Bangor the Penobscot River Trail system was Downeast Magazine's choice for Best New Trail System in 2019, and for good reason! Opened in 2019 by the Butler Family Conservation Fund, the trail system features a visitors center, warming huts, bike rentals, a canoe and kayak launch, and gravel hiking/biking trails.

Interested in planning a bike trip? Load up your bikes and maybe some camping equipment and set-up camp at Pine Grove Campground in Medway.

Once your home base is established, drive the short five miles to the trail head and get ready for a day of adventure! Trails range from easy to difficult, so there is something for everyone! Not interested in biking? Hikers are more than welcome on the trails or you can launch your canoe in at the public access hand carry boat launch located at the entrance from Hay Brook.

When you're getting ready to hit the trails don't forget your water, snacks, and an extra layer. All trails are carry in, carry out, so be prepared to pack out any trash.
